Naraka: Bladepoint All Characters

In Naraka Bladepoint, you have a diverse roster of characters, each with their unique abilities, so choosing the right one is crucial. Some of them are available right from the start, while others can be unlocked by completing quests or by using the in-game currency, silver, or the paid currency, gold.

For each of the characters, we’ve provided a generalized rating system for attributes, such as damage, control, survivability, in order to allow you to quickly grasp what their strengths and weaknesses are. Here’s a quick rundown of what each atribute represents:

• Damage – The character’s overall offensive capability and potential to quickly take out opponents using brute force.
• Control – Abilities that to disrupt opponents via stuns, knockbacks, pulls, combo-breakers, slows, or another for of crowd control. In a combat system with a pronounced focus on movement, control abilities are essential in order to be able to deliver your high-damage moves.
• Survival – Abilties that heal, restore armor, and allow the character to absorb more damage and/or recover faster after taking damage.
• Support – Abilities that allow the character to buff teammates, keep them safe, heal them, or help them recover their armor. Support abilities sometimes overlap with survival ones, but the focus here is on helping one’s teammates.
• Mobility – The character’s ability to quickly move around and reposition themselves both offensively and defensively. Again, in a game where the combat system requires constant engagement and disengagement, having high mobility is key for success, especially if your role is as the main damage dealer. Mobility skills include dashes, jumps, instant teleports, and any other skill that allows you to instantly reposition yourself, allowing for chasing down fleeing opponents, escaping losing battles, or repositioning yourself during a fight to gain the upper hand.

Note that some of the characters do tend to perform better than others in specific situations, but this doesn’t mean there’s a character that is all-powerful or another one that’s should never be picked. Instead, it’s all about understanding the different abilities and play styles and knowing in what situations they are the most and least viable.

Yoto Hime:

Naraka Bladepoint All Characters Tier List

To give newcomers to the game a general idea of what to expect from the different characters in Naraka Bladepoint, we’ve decided to make a tier list, with a specific focus on the characters’ viability in solo battle royale games. Obviously, this list is based on our personal opinions, so if you see a character you like and who works for you being placed in a lower tier, that doesn’t mean the character isn’t good. It simply means that we deem others to generally perform better/be easier to play with. And with that brief clarification out of the way, let’s start our tier list, going from bottom to top.

Naraka Bladepoint Tier D and C Characters

In our opinion, the least viable Naraka Bladepoint characters for solo games are Kurumi, Ziping Yin, Yueshan, and Tianhai.

D Tier Characters

• We place Kurumi at the lowest position, in Tier D, since she is a heal-based character with strong support abilities, which are great for team games, but not that useful in solos. Additionally, she has two umbrella abilities – an umbrella heal and umbrella teleport – which makes her movement very predictable. Other players will know that she’ll inevitably go back to where the umbrella is on the map, making her an easy target.
  
• Like Kurumi, Ziping Yin stands out with her exceptional support skills, offering both personal and team healing abilities that set her apart from other support characters like Kurumi and Justina Gu. With “Nature’s Touch,” she drops Spiritual Twigs that heal on pickup, a quick fix for herself and teammates without pausing the action. Her ultimate, “Saving Grace,” varies in effect based on its charge; it can boost recovery or even block a fatal hit, providing strategic flexibility. However, despite her strengths as a support, here, we are talking about solo matches, so it’s unsurprising that she falls behind compared to the following characters.
  

C Tier Characters

• Next, in C tier, first we have Tianhai, who has more options than Kurumi. Once he catches you with his grab ability, it becomes difficult to escape him. Also, his ultimate that transforms him into a powerful Vajra lends Tianhai increased combat prowess. However, his grab is usually rather difficult to land, especially in areas with more obstacles around, and, as powerful as hist transform ult might seem on paper, it actually makes Tienhai easy to run from. One of the better abilities of Tianhai in both solo and team games is his bell ability, which is a great combo stopper, allowing you to basically reset an unfavorable engagement and then continue the fight on your own terms.
  
• The second character whom we put in C tier is Yueshan, the Wuwei Marquis, whose ultimate allows him to chase down people better than Kurumi or Tienhai, yet it’s still not good enough of a gap-closer as it needs to be in order to be reliable. Generally, if an enemy player has some space between them and Yueshan, they’ll usually be able to outmaneuver the Wuwei Marquis with relative ease.
  
• The third C tier character in our list, Zai, combines agility and toughness. Her “Flame Ward” skill not only boosts her speed but also shields her from attacks, offering flexibility for dodges, attacks, or escapes. This ability, though potent, requires strategic timing, ending if Zai takes offensive actions. Her “Chain Scythe” ultimate elevates her fighting capabilities, introducing a powerful weapon that enhances her attacks. As Zai lands hits, she builds up to a devastating “Chain Link” attack, delivering a series of strikes that heal her with each connection. However, her reliance on melee combat and the precise timing needed to leverage her skills fully adds a layer of challenge, and robs her of the utility required to rank her any higher.
  

Naraka Bladepoint Tier B and Tier A Characters

Moving on to the higher tiers, we have Valda Cui, Feria Shen, Temulch, and Viper Ning in B tier, and Wuchen, Takeda, Akos Hu, and Tarka Ji in A Tier.

B Tier Characters

• Temulch is one of the best pick for team games, but in solos, he is somewhat held back by his lack of any outstanding offensive abilities. On the plus side, his tornado ultimate ability gives him a defensive disengage, allowing him to reset a fight if things start to go sideways for him. Plus, the tornado slows down any enemy players who try to go through it, potentially giving Temulch an advantage for a counterattack, or time to heal up and recover.
  
• Feria Shen specializes in long-range combat, skillfully blending speed with heavy artillery. Her “Gunplay” skill is a game-changer, allowing her to jump into action with an explosive shot that not only deals damage but also makes her untouchable for a brief moment. However, landing this shot demands accuracy. Then there’s “Mech Mayhem,” her ultimate, which sees her piloting a mech bristling with weapons. It’s a powerhouse in group fights but less so in one-on-one duels, as nimble opponents tend to dodge the barrage. Up close, she’s less formidable, struggling against melee fighters who get too close. For these reasons, despite her offensive potency, we cannot put her any higher than B tier.
  
• Valda Cui can actually be very good in solos, but only if you are able to use her water traps, which can be challenging, especially for newer players. Also, her ultimate isn’t anything amazing. It lets you deal some free damage to the targeted enemy, but it lacks much utility outside of that. Besides, if you miss your ultimate, you are left with very limited follow-up options. Finally, she doesn’t have the greatest mobility, which is another reason why we didn’t put her any higher.
  
• Next, Viper Ning’s main downsides are that, like Valda Cui, lacks any great movement abilities. Also, although the effects of her ultimate are great, it’s mostly easy for enemy players to escape its range before the stun is triggered. She does have potentially strong combos with her F skills, but landing them is made more difficult by her subpar movement.
  

A Tier Characters

• Takeda is placed in A tier, recognized for his formidable 1v1 capabilities but limited by less versatile movement options compared to other characters. His skills are geared towards enhancing his combat resilience, with an F1 skill that makes him immune to focus attacks temporarily and a V1 option that enables airborne juggle combos. However, his lack of good engagement and disengagement abilities is what made keep him out of the S tier. Despite his strengths in direct combat, the character’s lack of quick and reliable movement options restricts his effectiveness in the context of solo play, hence his placement in the A tier.
  
• Tarka Ji has better movement than Takeda, but his downside is that his ultimate makes it difficult for him to disengage safely, yet, at the same time he does need to use his ult to come on top during fights. Most of the time, his way of disengaging consists of running away, which makes him an easy target for getting grapple-chained. That said, in fights, Tarka Ji is a beast, especially when his F ability is up, so if anyone is unwise enough to engage him then, he’ll most likely come on top.
  
• The third character we put in tier A is Wuchen, who has high survivability with his F skill that allows him to recover some of his armor. Also, one of the versions of his ultimate lets him teleport-swap wit h an enemy, which is a great combo-opener for himself and combo-breaker for the enemy player. Really, the only reason we put him in A and not S isn’t any inherent issue he has, but rather that the next characters simply outperform him most of the time.
  
• Finally, Akos Hu secures a tha A ranking thanks to his balanced offensive and defensive skills. His Roar skill unleashes an AoE attack, damaging enemies and granting him damage reduction per hit, a boon for his survivability in the thick of battle. The Feral Frenzy ultimate further enhances Akos Hu, allowing aerial pounces and strengthening his attacks, including a health-restoring tiger strike sequence. While potent, Akos Hu competes with characters whose sheer offensive might overshadows his balanced kit. Nevertheless, his ability to adapt to combat’s ebb and flow makes him a noteworthy contender, embodying the essence of a versatile predator.
  

Naraka Bladepoint S Tier characters

Finally, we have to talk about who are in our opinion the best of the best Naraka Bladepoint characters. In S Tier, we have Justina Gu, Matari, and Yoto Hime.

• Starting with Justina Gu, her main strength is the utility of her ult. The fist version of her ultimate ability gives the player three bursts of movement, which allows her to both chase down enemy players who are trying to escape her, and to disengage and escape a losing fight herself. Furthermore, the three bursts allow her to quickly reposition herself to gain the upper hand in a fight or fake a disengagement with the first burst, only to turn around and counterattack with the second and third. Furthermore, hitting more than one character with a dash resets the dash, potentially granting you infinite dashes for the time duration of the ability. In a game where movement is king, characters with lots of movement options like Justina Gu rightfully earn the S tier ranking.
  
• Next, Matari is yet another character with a powerful movement-based ultimate which is a great combo-opener and perfect for chasing-down fleeing enemies. At the same time, her F ability grants her a good escape option in case a fight isn’t going her way. Furthermore, there’s a synergy between her ult and F that lets her recharge the flashes on her F much faster, helping her both offensively and defensively.
  
• The next character in S tier is Yoto Hime, whose ult lets her unleash three powerful slashes in a chosen direction that deal high damage and are amazing combo-breakers. The third version of her ult also restores a bit of health and armor, so she also has decent survivability. Finally, if you are good enough with her F3 skill, that sends out a damaging and attack-blocking blade, it could serve as a highly-potent tool for baiting opponents into using their skills and for interrupting their attacks.

Metro Exodus, much like the other games from the Metro series, is a story-driven single-player FPS experience that, rather than encouraging you to run and gun away at your enemies demands that you take your time and slowly and carefully progress through its diverse levels. This is a very atmospheric and cinematic game that immerses you in its rich setting and requires that you stay alert and aware of your surroundings, lest you get surprise-attacked by an angry mutated animal or a hostile human NPC.

Unlike its predecessors, a lot of levels in Metro Exodus feature wide-open areas rather than always shoving the player into narrow underground corridors and rooms. However, through the creative use of ambient effects, dynamic lighting, and environment, the game still manages to keep you on edge and fuel your anxiety even when you are out in the open and should technically be able to see when a threat is coming long before it gets to you.

The only potential downside of the game is that its final act may come off as a bit anticlimactic – it doesn’t feature any big showdown where you fight an overpowered bad guy, which may be a bit disappointing to some players. Despite this, the game is still a great, atmospheric, and story-rich experience with some horror elements, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for an immersive single-player game filled with thrills and tense moments but also flavored with well-placed emotional beats.

Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 is a colorful and hectic PvE FPS with tons of different weapons, weapon upgrades, add-ons, and equipment that you can find in the game. It can be played in single-player, but the best way to experience it is in its multiplayer co-op mode where you and a maximum of three other players come face to face with a diverse selection of enemies that have varying attack patterns and weaknesses that require you to work as a team in order to successfully take down. Though on the surface, this may seem like a run and gun game, there’s a lot of tactical depth under the surface, and a lot of it comes from the four character classes that you can choose to play as. Each class has its unique abilities that come in handy in different situations and often only a coordinated team effort, where each character’s ability is used at the right time and in the right way, would be enough to defeat some of the stronger enemies. That said, you can still play through the game single-player or with only one or two more people – the game’s difficulty automatically adjusts to the number of players on a team.

To conclude, Borderlands 2 is tons of fun, especially if you have one or more friends that want to play it in co-op mode with you. On the other hand, if you are looking for a more single-player-oriented game, there are better options out there.

BioShock Remastered

BioShock Remastered, as the title implies, is a remastered version of the original BioShock single-player FPS game, which, over the years, has reached the status of a cult classic among the fans of the single-player FPS genre. It is regarded as one of the FPS games that have the best stories and most immersive settings and is often put next to classics such as Half-Life 1 and 2, System Shock, Dead Space, and Deus Ex. In BioShock, you gain access to a variety of weapons and special powers that help you fight your way through a vast underwater city, as you slowly learn more about its past and uncover its mysterious secrets. Throughout the game, on many occasions, you are forced to make moral decisions and given the opportunity to customize the powers of your character, which gives the game some role-playing elements.

Dying Light

Dying Light is another story-driven FPS experience, but here you can choose between engaging in its single-player mode or play the game with your friends in the online co-op mode. Dying Light combines several elements from other popular gaming genres to create something that’s both unique, and familiar. The setting of the game is a city infested with zombie-like creatures that you can fight choose to fight or, preferably, run away from. The twist here is that the game employs parkour-style character movement. In other words, you can use your character’s parkour skills to evade and escape the zombies that are chasing you, and, in some cases, you can even use those skills offensively. You do, of course, get the option to simply shoot or whack away at the incoming zombies, However, more often than not, you’d find it much smarter and more efficient to climb over a wall or jump to a neighboring rooftop to save your skin rather than engage face to face with a horde of enraged zombies. This mix between games like Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge lends Dying Light a unique, yet appropriate dynamic and makes the game very enjoyable and engaging, which is why we’d recommend it to anyone looking for some tense and fast-paced unconventional FPS with zombies.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is yet another immersive story-driven single-player FPS. Like the previous games from the Deus Ex series, Mankind Divided incorporates RPG elements, such as various ways to upgrade and enhance your character. Similarly to its predecessors, Deus Ex features a distinct sci-fi setting that the game makes great use of. The player’s character has access to a wide selection of hi-tech abilities and since the game’s environments are so densely-populated with different types of technology, you are able to hack into almost anything and use it to your advantage. Other abilities that you have allow you to quickly move from one place to another, gain stealth, reach inaccessible locations, and more. The great thing about this type of gameplay is that there is always more than one way to complete a given objective, which encourages player creativity and paying attention to every detail.

Through stealth and completing objectives without getting noticed is a major part of the game, there’s also the compulsory gunplay, or else this wouldn’t be a real FPS. While stealth is most certainly encouraged in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, this absolutely doesn’t take anything away from its combat sequences, in which you do not feel overpowered, but are given lots of control and, if you are good enough, you may even manage to deescalate the situation.

The only thing that may count as a downside of Mankind Divided is its somewhat restrained story. Not that it’s bad or unenjoyable, but, compared to other Deus Ex games, it feels smaller in scale and not as impactful. That said, it’s still a solid and immersive experience, that’s only heightened by the slick and thrilling gameplay.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is the sequel to Dying Light, and it offers a lot of the same thrills as the first game, only here the parkour and zombie-chasing sequences have been ramped up to eleven. If you liked running through a zombie-infested city using slick parkour moves in the first game, there’s a lot more of that in the sequel. Furthermore, now even the city in which the game is set (it’s a different city from the first game) feels like the player’s parkour playground (as it should). High buildings close to one another or connected via zip-lines allow for escaping the hordes of zombies even when it all seems lost.

There are, of course, a number of differences from the first game. The whole setting is, in fact, different. The storyline takes place a lot of years into the future, after the first game, and humanity seems to have gone back to a kind of dark age. Technology is scarce and modern weapons are a rarity, meaning that you’d need to rely more on melee weapons and your parkour skills to survive. It’s truly a unique setting that helps distinguish the sequel from the original and gives it its own character and style. 

Both Dying Light games are great, so we recommend them both. However, the sequel is not available for macOS, so you’d need to use a streaming service to play it on your Mac computer. The service we’d recommend using to play Dying Light 2 on Mac is Boosteroid.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a well-known tactical FPS game in which two teams – terrorists and counterterrorists – fight one another while also trying to complete a specific objective such as detonating/defusing a bomb or holding/evacuating a group of NPC hostages. The core of the Counter-Strike formula that dates all the way back to 2002 remains mostly unchanged in CS:GO, giving it an old-school feel, compared to more modern shooters. In CS:GO, all player characters are virtually the same, with the only difference being their appearance. Everyone has the same amount of max hit points, max armor points, movement speed, accuracy, reload speed, etc., which is one of the main differences between CS:GO and the games from the hero-shooter genre that seems to be more popular nowadays.

However, despite using an older formula and having been released nearly 10 years ago, CS:GO retains its popularity and benefits from full support for macOS. It is still one of the most played FPS games and is also one of the bigger e-sports. Its simplistic premise and leveled playfield may not provide the same amount of spectacle as more modern shooters, but the game makes up for it with very fast-paced and tense matches as well as balanced, fair, and highly-polished gameplay – the result of two decades of refining the initial Counter-Strike formula.

A cool mechanic in Black Ops 3 is the mind-control powers that you have access to and that you can use to attack or even control enemies. This adds a sci-fi flavor to the game and helps diversify the gameplay in campaign mode. However, the actual campaign is rather short and, though its story is interesting, it won’t be anything that you haven’t seen before.

As for the multiplayer, it’s as competitive as ever and the diverse cast of characters, each with their specific role in a team, adds another layer of strategy and tactics to make each match even more engaging and exhilarating.

Last but not least, the zombie mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is one of the best parts of the game. It may feel like a totally different game, as the sci-fi setting is replaced by a 60s noir atmosphere, yet it’s a strangely fitting setting for a zombie apocalypse Also, the cool cast of scallywag characters and their amusing interactions are a treat to behold and experience as you are trying to survive another wave of incoming zombies.

Tannenberg

Price: $19.99

How you can play it: Natively

Tannenberg is an indie multiplayer PvP first-person shooter game set during World War I, that puts you in the shoes of a regular soldier fighting in the muddy trenches. The game is a sequel to Verdun – another multiplayer FPS about World War I and as such it shares a lot of similarities with the latter.

A notable highlight of the game is that its devs have paid serious attention to historical accuracy, providing accurate depictions of weapons, equipment, uniforms, and environments from the specific period. In it, you can play as Austro-Hungarians, Germans, Russians, and more, with each faction having different weapons and gear.

The gameplay in Tannenberg can be a lot of fun, but it may take some getting used to mainly because the game tends to be very punishing when you make a mistake. For example, one-shot kills are very common, so running out of cover will more often than not result in a respawn. Also, coordination and teamwork are key to success, which can make it difficult to win if you end up in a team of people who are unwilling to cooperate.

Another possible downside is that the game doesn’t have a very high player count, so it can at times be difficult to get matched with other players. However, if you have a buddy or two to join you while you play, Tannenberg can be a very immersive and compelling experience, especially if you care about historical accuracy and like games about World War I.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is a free-to-play multiplayer hero shooter game that uses the well-known Battle Royale formula, found in so many games today. It is, however, one of the best games Battle Royale games at the moment. Apex Legends offers a colorful cast of unique and interesting characters with cool abilities that do not feel overpowered, and it also has a nice selection of large maps with creative, futuristic, sci-fi designs. Personally, my favorite thing about this game is how rich and inspired its maps look and feel – there’s hardly a place on any of the maps that are wasted and that doesn’t have something going for it, which makes even the earliest stages of the game, when the players are usually far apart from one another, fun, as you go around, exploring the map for weapons, upgrades, gear, and ammunition.

If you have played other Battle Royale games in the past, you should feel right at home with Apex Legends, on the other hand, if this is your first time trying out a game of this type, you should be able to quickly get a general idea of how to play the game. However, to truly get good at Apex Legends, you’d need to pay attention to the specifics of each weapon, character, map specifics, and even the variety of movement patterns and how they interact with the terrain you’re currently on.

All in all, Apex Legends is a game that we can recommend, especially since it’s totally free to play. If you are interested in giving it a try on your Mac, you can play Apex Legends on it using Boosteroid or GeForce Now.

Overwatch 2

Price: Free (Blizzard)

How you can play it: Cloud Gaming (Boosteroid)

The sequel (and replacement) to Blizzard’s highly-popular multiplayer hero-shooter, Overwatch, feels and plays a lot like the original game. It brings back the fast-paced battles where each player chooses a different character and can switch to another character in-between rounds. The focus is once again placed on PvP matches, but Overwatch 2 will also gradually implement cooperative PvE content, with story-based missions. Apparently, Blizzard’s goal with the sequel is to put more focus on the game’s story and to expand the lore of its world.

Other noteworthy changes made to Overwatch 2 are the addition of three new heroes (with all the original ones also making a return), the addition of six new PvP maps, and the reduction of team size from six to five players.

However, the most notable of the changes is that Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play game unlike the subscription-based model of its predecessor. This means you can simply go to Blizzard’s site, register there, and then you’ll be able to play the game. Sadly, it’s not supported for macOS, but as we already said, there’s still a way to play it on a Mac with the help of cloud gaming.

Left 4 Dead 2

Price: $9.99 (Steam)

Left 4 Dead 2 is another co-op FPS with zombies, but this time it’s a more straightforward game, where your character doesn’t have any advanced parkour skills or special abilities that would allow them to escape the onslaught of infected. Instead, you’d need to rely on any weapons that you can find and on the three other people in your squad in order to survive. Even though Left 4 Dead 2 is over a decade old, to this day it remains one of the best zombie FPS games of all time with its extreme attention to detail, intuitive and easy to pick up gameplay, and advanced zombie horde AI (called “The Director”) that makes each play through unique and adapts seamlessly to how each team of survivors is playing the game. 

We thought about putting the newer Back 4 Blood game (a spiritual sequel to Left 4 Dead) in this list, but even though Left 4 Dead 2 is a much older game, it’s still times better and features significantly more advanced mechanics, AI, atmosphere, and characters which is why it’s the one we’d recommend.

Unfortunately, though the game used to have a Mac version, it cannot run natively on Macs that have macOS Catalina or higher installed. However, you can still play the game on your Mac even if you have Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey with the help of Boosteroid and GeForce Now.

Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 is another beloved FPS game by Valve that embraces the hero-shooter formula and is probably the main reason this specific FPS genre has become so popular over the years. Even though Team Fortress 2 is almost 15 years old (released in 2007), to this day it continues to have a very large player base and community. The game has the status of a cult-classic by now and if you are someone who enjoys games like Overwatch, Valorant, or Apex Legends, you should absolutely try Team Fortress 2 – the game that started it all.

Despite its age and despite there are now many other games that more or less try to do the same, Team Fortress 2 is still relevant today and a lot of this is due to the game’s distinct art style, its cast of ludicrous characters, and balanced gameplay. By far, the best part of the game are its iconic characters and their interactions on the battlefield – every character has their own distinct personality that gets perfectly reflected in their unique abilities and gameplay style, yet all of them are equally silly yet oftentimes relatable.

For users who haven’t played any hero shooters before (or even ones who have), it may be a bit difficult getting into Team Fortress 2, due to the variety of character classes. At first, it can be difficult to learn how to properly play with and against each class. However, the Team Fortress 2 community is actually surprisingly friendly for the most part, which should ease the process of getting better at the game when you are first starting off.

Sadly, though the game used to be supported for macOS, it no longer has an updated Mac version. However, you can still play it on Mac using the Boosteroid and GeForce Now cloud gaming services.

In other words, it’s possible that a given game that can be bought on both Steam and Epic Games Store, only has a Steam version in Boosteroid, so if you own the game in Epic Games Store and not Steam, you won’t be able to play it on Boosteroid (unless you also purchase it on Steam). For the most part, Boosteroid tries to offer every gaming store as an option for the game that it has in its library. Still, we’ve made sure to specify in our list which gaming store versions for each of the games are available in Boosteroid. The Best Steam Games Available for Mac

Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is often viewed as one of the greatest indie games of all time. It is an 2D action-platformer metroidvania known for its unique and immersive atmosphere, mysterious lore, and highly-responsive and fluid combat system.

In this game, you play as a silent protagonist known only as “the Knight” whom you know nothing about initially. But as you progress through the game and explore the dimly-lit caverns and corridors of a massive underground kingdom called Hallownest, you start piecing together disjointed fragments of information. Eventually, you’ll start revealing the history of both the game’s unusual setting and that of its protagonist.

Needless to say, your journey through Hallownest won’t be without its dangers and obstacles. You’ll face a wide variety of enemies and bosses, and will need to apply fast reflexes, well-timed attacks, and quick thinking to find and exploit their weaknesses, while remaining safe from their attacks. It’s a rather difficult and often unforgiving game that’s often likened to a Souls-like game. However, if you like challenge and care about the presentation and atmosphere of a game, Hollow Knight is definitely an experience that I can recommend.

Disco Elysium

Another indie darling, Disco Elysium mixes together a murder mystery noir story, a traditional RPG gameplay, and a dystopian setting to create a unique gaming experience that surprises you at every corner. It’s a game unlike any other, yet many of its elements will feel familiar to people who like role-playing games.

At the start of Disco Elysium, you wake up as a half-naked man with a terrible hangover and alcohol-induced amnesia. You soon find out that you are a cop detective, but can’t remember much else about your past. The main part of the story kicks off when you find a hanged person, at which point your task becomes figuring out why and how they died. The gist of the game is basically a murder mystery, but it’s all about the way it’s presented.

While uncovering the mystery, you also try to figure out who you are and so a large portion of the gameplay actually happens inside your character’s head. Different parts of his psyche take on the role of separate characters and the way you manage them determines both what happens inside and outside the protagonist. It’s a truly unique take on the classical RPG formula, but one that works incredibly well. Unlike other games in the genre, Disco Elysium doesn’t have combat, but there are still dice rolls during conversations with other characters, and your character’s stats combined with the roll you get determines if a given conversation goes your way or not.

Ultimately, Disco Elysium is as much an experience as it is a game, and it’s one that I can very strongly recommend to people who enjoy unconventional takes on established tropes that challenge the way you view a particular genre and gaming as a whole.

Dying Light

Zombies have always been a popular film and video-game trope and there are countless gaming titles where they are featured as the main antagonist, so is there anything about Dying Light that sets it apart from other zombie fiction? The premise of this game is quite generic – a virus outbreak causes a large Middle Eastern city to be quarantined, and you are dropped in the middle of it all with the goal to find a rogue political figure who may hold the key to a cure. 

However, what makes the game different and unique from other zombie apocalypse titles is the dynamic between the player on one hand, and the infested city and its inhabitants on the other. In Dying Light, weapons and ammo are scarce, and you cannot hope to stand your ground against the coming hordes. Instead, it’s all about using your character’s parkour skills and the surrounding urban environment to find creative ways to escape the hungry “biters” when your weapons are no longer enough. And then there’s the day and night cycle that drastically affects the gameplay by making the zombies more aggressive, numerous, and dangerous at night. This adds a welcome layer of tension as you are in a constant race against the clock, jumping from rooftop to rooftop on your way to the nearest shelter, which you must reach before the sun sets.

Dying Light is very well-polished gameplay-wise, has great graphics for a title from 2015, and is also not particularly demanding, so it can provide decent performance even on weaker machines. The only two possible downsides are that its story can be a bit lackluster due to being predictable, and some of the voice performances aren’t great. Other than that, if you are into zombies, parkour, and survival horror, this is definitely a title you need to check out!

Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 is an action FPS game often seen as the ultimate looter shooter experience. This game is all about exploring the planet of Pandora, defeating hordes of enemies, fighting in challenging boss battles, and, above all else, finding tons and tons of loot and weapons. 

If you like shooter games with a big weapon variety, then this one’s for you. Thanks to procedural generation, each weapon you can find in Borderlands 2 is unique in some way, and the only weapons that stay the same between playthroughs are the legendary ones, which are quite rare anyway.

And, of course, using all those weapons is super fun due to the varied and well-balanced enemies. At the start, nothing will be too challenging, but it won’t be long before the aliens of Pandora start to ramp up the difficulty, forcing you to adapt quickly and never letting you feel too comfortable or safe.

And to further enrich the gameplay loop, Borderlands 2 lets you pick between four unique characters, each with their own set of skills and abilities. This leads to a huge number of possible combinations and strategies to try, lending the game huge replayability, especially if you bring along a friend or two for some co-op fun.

Tomb Raider: The Survivor Trilogy

It’s difficult to separate the three latest Tomb Raider games and recommend a single one of them simply because they present different chapters of a singular storyline, and picking only one of them would leave out a huge chunk of the story. That’s not to say that they are the same game – Tomb Raider (2013) offers the coolest setting and environments, Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) is often regarded as the best overall, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) features a more mature story and tone, and has the coolest tombs to explore.

Looking at the trilogy as a whole, though it has certainly started to show its age by now, it’s still a very well executed addition to the long-standing Tomb Raider series. It brings back the elements that made the earlier games recognizable, but also adds modernized gameplay mechanics and improved graphics. Like the older Tomb Raider games, The Survivor Trilogy is all about exploring exotic and often dangerous locations and descending into the depths of buried tombs and ancient ruins. This time, however, you follow the story of a younger and less experienced Lara Croft, as you witness first-hand her journey to become the battle-hardened explorer we’ve come to know her as from the other games in this franchise.

A lot of what’s in this trilogy reminds of the earlier Tomb Raider installments, but the true highlights of these three games are what makes them different. The Survivor Trilogy is grittier and more mature, painting Lara as an actual person with weaknesses and flaws rather than the near-superhuman she was often portrayed as in the earlier games. On top of that, this trilogy features more advanced gameplay with puzzles of higher complexity, a more diverse combat system, and better exploration as the three games, while still linear, give the player more freedom to roam around and find hidden secrets off the beaten path.

In conclusion, if you are a fan of the Tomb Raider franchise and/or like action adventure games set in exotic places, this trilogy is an easy recommend from us!

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence is a 2013 action game and a spin-off to the acclaimed Metal Gear Solid series. The game puts us in control of Raiden – a cybernetically enhanced ninja whom we know from Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 and the story is set some four years after the latter. Plot-wise, you get the expected intrigue with powerful military corporations, political scheming, and characters double-crossing one another, but the true highlight of this title is its gameplay. 

Compared to the other games from this series, which had a defined focus on stealth, the intense hack-and-slash combat in Revengence comes as a notable deviation from the established formula. There are still the trademark stealth sections of the Metal Gear Solid games, but those mostly take a backseat to all the slicing and dicing you’ll be doing with Raiden’s high-frequency katana that can cut through almost anything.

Even though this is now a 10-year-old game, its visuals still mostly hold-up today and enhance its faster-paced and action-packed gameplay. And then there’s the soundtrack that perfectly blends electronic and orchestral music to complement the combat-oriented gameplay.

Some imperfections of the game are its occasionally temperamental camera, its overly-challenging, and a story that requires you to have some prior knowledge of the stories of the previous games.

Other than that, however, Metal Gear Rising: Revengence offers top-notch action with a fluid and over-the-top combat system, while retaining a lot of the trademark stealth and secret agent vibes that the Metal Gear series is known for.

Subnautica

Subnautica is a survival exploration game set in the ocean depths of an alien planet that’s mostly covered in water. Like with other survival games, your primary goal is to gather resources and use them to build a secure base and craft equipment to help you survive the harsh environment. However, what sets Subnautica apart from other games in this genre is its incredibly well-realized open world. 

As I said, everything takes place underwater, and though this may seem like a turn-off to some players, it takes no more than half an hour of Subnautica to fall in love with its ocean depths. It’s a vibrant world teeming with life, where each different handcrafted area and biome have their unique flora and fauna. Just don’t be fooled by the pretty fish and corals – danger lurks everywhere in Subnautica and the deeper you go, the less safe it becomes. From carnivorous fish, to environmental hazards, there’s always something that can get in the way of your quest for exploration. Then again, this is the bread and butter of every good exploration game, and it is what will be your main drive to further improve your equipment, so that you can finally see what you’ll find another kilometer or two below the surface. And trust me, there are things to be found down there.

Subnautica truly is one of the best survival and exploration games out there that perfectly captures the excitement that comes from venturing into an exotic alien world shrouded in mystery and filled with promises of secrets waiting to be revealed.

BioShock

The Bioshock series is made up of three games celebrated for their unique atmosphere, world-building and mature story. The first and the third games are both considered among the best ever made. We put the series here as a single entity, but we’ll quickly go over the individual games if, for example, you just want to try one game and not the entire series.

The first game is set in the 1960s and takes you to Rapture – a dilapidated, yet majestic underwater city whose citizens went insane because of genetically modifying themselves too much in pursuit of physical and mental perfection. It puts a steampunk twist on the 60s aesthetic and adds mild horror undertones for a creepier end result. The environments show incredible attention to detail, making the storytelling in Bioshock 1 a prime example of the age-old advice “show, don’t tell. Starting the game, you, as the player, are given no context on why you go to Rapture, but as you fight against Rapture’s mutated citizens through gloomy corridors and derelict halls, you start piecing together a shockingly clever story that eventually changes your whole perspective of the game.

BioShock 2, on the other hand, takes place after the first game and uses the same setting, aesthetic, and gameplay, but some of the spark from the original seems lost here. This is likely because the sequel is the only title in the trilogy that’s from a different studio. Not that the game is bad per se – some even say it offers better gameplay – yet it’s definitely two big steps back in terms of story, characters, and overall atmosphere, while being a step forward in gameplay.

And then we come to BioShock: Infinite – it looks and feels quite different from the first two, but it also brings back the charm that made the original a classic. Here Rapture is replaced by a floating city named Columbia. The writing and atmosphere in this game are as good, if not better, than in BioShock 1, and the two DLC episodes called Burial at Sea tie the game back to the first two. It retains the improvements from Bioshock 2 while polishing the gameplay further and introducing a companion character that spends most of the game with you.

If you aren’t sure which one of the games to try, I recommend starting with the first one and then going straight to Infinite. BioShock 2 is optional if you loved the setting of Rapture and want to return to it, in the heavy shoes of a different and more powerful character.

XCOM 2

The next game we want to tell you about is XCOM 2 – a tactical turn-based sci-fi strategy, where you play as the commander of a resistance force fighting against an alien race that has taken over earth. The gameplay is split into two halves – one is the turn-based missions, where you control a team of up to 8 soldiers (12 in special missions), and your goal is to complete a certain objective, while fighting any alien enemies that come in your way. The second half is team and base management. Here, you upgrade your equipment, research new tech, and make changes to your troops so that they become more effective in the field.

Paying close attention and micromanaging both aspects of the gameplay is crucial, because if you go into a mission unprepared, or you don’t carefully consider each move of your troops, you won’t last long against the unforgiving alien enemies. XCOM 2 is a tough game, and its perma-death mechanic (if you lose a soldier, they’re gone for good) means that every major mistake you make will have actual long-lasting consequences on your entire playthrough. On top of this, the turn-based nature of the game means that RNG plays a huge role when determining the outcome of a hostile encounter, meaning that even when you’ve done everything possible to prepare for a mission, things can still go south really quickly. Because of this, the game is definitely not for everyone, but that is not to say that XCOM 2 isn’t good. Quite the contrary – it is a splendidly-well executed strategy that really makes you summon your inner tactician, as it both teaches you to think three moves ahead and also account for the fact that, like in real life, chance can always mess up your plans, so you need to have a plan B.

Hades

The last title on our list, Hades, is a roguelike inspired by ancient Greek mythology that is known for its fast-paced and fluid combat and seamless blending of story and gameplay. The game follows the story of Hades’ son, Zagreus, whose goal is to leave his father’s domain, the underworld, and reach Mount Olympus, where he hopes to find his mother, Persephone.

The procedural generation that roguelike games are known for generally leads to a looser narrative and few (if any) hand-crafted characters, but what’s unique about Hades is that despite being a roguelike, the game actually has a well-written story and interesting characters. Furthermore, it’s possible that you don’t get the full story in a single playthrough, which encourages players to have another go, giving the game huge replayability.

Of course, I should also mention the top-notch combat system of this game. There’s a satisfying selection of weapons to find and use and each of them feels distinct and favors a different playstyle. And then there’s the boon mechanic, which lets you receive blessings from the Olympian gods to enhance your abilities and obtain different bonuses. The cool part about this is that you can combine different boons that synergize with one another and make your character even more powerful. The freedom to fine-tune your build lets you tailor everything to your specific playstyle and adds a ton of variety to an already well-executed combat system.

Overall, as far as roguelikes go, Hades is definitely one of the best in the genre, so if you are into dungeons, fast-paced hack-and-slash combat, and a gameplay that encourages you to explore and learn things for yourself, then you should certainly check this one out!

Admittedly, the service still needs some polishing and its number of servers and locations could be bigger, but it’s definitely come a long way since its humble beginnings and is currently a solid option for gaming on a Mac that’s quickly rising in popularity.

In the next lines, we will compare Boosteroid to several other popular Mac gaming methods, namely GeForce Now (one of the most popular cloud gaming services), Parallels (a virtualization software), and Boot Camp (a tool that lets you install Windows on Intel Macs). We will give you our honest opinion on how well Boosteroid fares against each of these other methods based on our own experience from extensive testing.

Boosteroid vs GeForceNow

Like Boosteroid, GeForce Now is a cloud gaming service that lets you stream games to your Mac. For the purposes of the comparison, we will mainly focus on the Priority plan of GeForce Now, as it is the one closest in price and performance to Boosteroid.

Pricing – The two cloud gaming platforms have comparable pricing, with Boosteroid being a bit more affordable. Boosteroid costs €7.49/month when you get a yearly subscription, and GeForce Now costs €8.33/month for its Priority plan when you get a six-month subscription. GeForce Now offers a free version, but it has a 1-hour per gaming session limit and makes you wait in a queue before you could connect to a gaming rig. In busier hours, you may need to wait for up to half an hour.

Requirements – To use Boosteroid, your Mac needs to have 4 GB of Memory (RAM) or more, and run on macOS 10.10 (Yosemite) or later. The minimum required Internet speed for Boosteroid is 15 Mbps and the recommended is 25 Mbps or more. Also, the recommended Internet latency for Boosteroid is 40 ms or lower.

For GeForce Now, your Mac must have 4 GB of RAM and run on macOS 10.13.2 or later. The Internet requirements for GeForce Now are the same as the ones for Boosteroid.

For both services, it is recommended to use cable Internet or to be connected to a 5G Wi-Fi network.

Specifications/image quality – Both Boosteroid and GeForce Now’s Priority Plan provide a picture quality of 1080p and lock your maximum FPS at 60. In both cases, you can make changes in the in-game settings, but image quality won’t exceed the limitations we mentioned. With GeForce Now, you are given the option to upgrade to a higher tier subscription plan, and then you are allowed to stream in 4K resolution and up to 120 FPS, but note that this will also increase the bandwidth usage, so you’ll need a very strong Internet to realistically get that image quality.

Game Library Comparison – Boosteroid’s game library currently has around 500 games and is notably smaller than that of GeForce Now, which features over 1000 titles. However, Boosteroid has the advantage of featuring a lot of triple-A gaming titles that aren’t available in the bigger cloud gaming service. For instance, highly-popular games such as Overwatch 2, Fall Guys, and Elden Ring aren’t in GeForce Now’s library but are available in Boosteroid.

Game Performance Comparison – Game performance in both services mainly depends on how good your Internet connection is and how far you are from the closest server of the respective service. Hardware-wise, both platforms offer comparable gaming rigs that can run the latest games with Ultra High settings, with Priority rigs of GeForce Now having a slight edge here, as they typically provide a bit more FPS on average. However, considering that, with both services, you are limited to a maximum of 60 FPS, this small difference won’t matter in most cases. 

Free Games – Neither platform gives you free access to games that are otherwise paid. That said, both services feature a wide selection of free-to-play games, including titles such as CS: GO, League of Legends, and Genshin Impact. Notably, Boosteroid features Overwatch 2 and Fall Guys, which are presently not available in GeForce Now.

Boosteroid vs Parallels

The main difference between Boosteroid and Parallels is that Parallels installs a Windows virtual machine on your Mac and lets you download the game you want to play, whereas Boosteroid directly streams the game to you without the need to download anything.

Pricing – Boosteroid’s one-year subscription costs €89.89 in total and the Standard version of Parallels costs €99.99 (or $99.99) per year, or €129.99/$129.99 as a one-time-purchase. Parallels offers a 14-day free trial that lets you test the service before you decide whether to commit to it.

Requirements – The requirements for Boosteroid are 4 GB of RAM, macOS 10.10 or later, and an internet connection with 15 Mbps minimum/25 Mbps recommended speed and a latency of 40 ms or lower.

The minimum requirements for Parallels are 4 GB RAM and macOS Mojave 10.14.6 or newer. However, since you want to be using this app for gaming, it’s best if your Mac meets its recommended requirements, which are 16 GB RAM, macOS Ventura 13.0, and one of the following CPUs: Apple M2, M1 Ultra, M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 chips, Intel Core i5, Core i7, Core i9 or Xeon processor. If your Mac doesn’t meet the recommended requirements for Parallels or at least doesn’t get close to them, you’ll either be unable to play any games through it or be only able to play some very undemanding titles, such as Team Fortress 2.

Games – Boosteroid gives you access to over 500 games in its library. With Parallels, you can technically install any game in its Windows virtual machine, but the majority of competitive multiplayer games cannot be played in this way because their anti-cheat systems do not allow them to be run in a VM. Also, at the moment of writing this, DirectX 12 isn’t supported in Parallels, so games that require it can’t be run on its virtual machine.

Performance – If you meet the Internet requirements of Boosteroid and you aren’t very far from a Boosteroid server, you should be getting consistently good performance across all games that you try, no matter how high their hardware requirements might be. With Parallels, your performance will be determined by the hardware of your Mac and the game’s requirements. 

Note that, while playing any game through a Parallels virtual machine, only a portion (usually half) of your Mac’s resources will be used for the game, as some of the machine’s memory and CPU cores will need to be used by your macOS, and thus won’t be available for the game that’s running in the Windows VM. In other words, only very powerful Macs have the hardware to provide decent gameplay performance for demanding games played in Parallels VMs.

Ease of Use – Boosteroid is easier to use as you only need to open it in your browser, create an account, subscribe to the service, search for a given game, and click Play. With Parallels, you need to install the app, create a virtual machine, and then download the game you want to play in the VM (usually by first installing a game store client such as Steam or Epic Games Store). The process is still pretty straightforward, but may take some time, whereas with Boosteroid starting a game is as simple as going to its site and clicking Play on the game’s page.

Games tested

The Mac we used for testing Parallels didn’t provide us with acceptable performance even on undemanding games, such as Team Fortress 2 and Rocket League, so we didn’t perform any further tests for this method. As already mentioned, Parallels is best used with high-performing M1 and M2 Macs, as this is often the only way to play certain games in such Macs. However, in every other instance, Boosteroid will provide a superior experience.

Boosteroid vs Boot Camp Assistant

While Boosteroid lets you play games remotely, by streaming them from a gaming Windows server, Boot Camp Assistant allows you to turn your Mac into a Windows computer by letting you split your drive into two partitions and install the Windows 10 OS in one of those partitions. After that, you can boot your Mac from the Windows partition and install Windows games in it. 

Pricing – The price for Boosteroid is €7.49/month with the one-year subscription plan (€89.89 for the whole year) or €9.89/month with the single-month subscription plan.

Boot Camp Assistant is a built-in Mac app, and it’s free to use. Installing Windows with its help can also be done for free, but once the new OS is installed, you will see a prompt to purchase a Windows 10 license on your screen. You will also not have access to certain Windows features. However, the prompt doesn’t get in the way, and the features that will be locked aren’t needed for gaming, so you can technically use Windows for playing games on your Mac without paying.

Requirements – Boosteroid requires macOS 10.10 or later, 4 gigabytes of RAM or more, 15 Mbps (minimum) and 25 Mbps or more (recommended) Internet speed, and no more than 40 ms ping.

Boot Camp Assistant is available only for Macs that have Intel chips and cannot be used on M1 or M2 Macs. Here is a list of the Intel Mac models on which you can use Boot Camp Assistant:

Games – The gaming library of Boosteroid features over 500 titles. With Boot Camp, you technically have access to all Windows-compatible games, but you are limited by the hardware specs of your Mac because you cannot run games that have hardware requirements not met by your Mac.

Performance – You will get the same performance with all games in Boosteroid, no matter how demanding they might be, so long as your Internet is fast and stable enough. With the Boot Camp method, your performance will be determined by the specs of your Mac. If the computer meets the recommended requirements of a given game, the gameplay performance should be smooth even at higher settings. If only the minimum requirements are met, the game should still be playable, but your FPS won’t be high, and you will need to use low-image quality settings.

Ease of use – Boosteroid is a lot easier and faster to use compared to Boot Camp. With Boot Camp, you will need to spend a couple of hours to get everything ready, because you’ll need to wait for Windows to install on your Mac and then for the game you want to download in the Windows partition. With Boosteroid, you can start any game from its library in a matter of a couple of minutes.
