TL;DR – Methods to play REPO on Mac
- Boosteroid: Perfect for low-spec Macs or anyone who wants plug-and-play access – just make sure your internet connection is solid.
- CrossOver: Best for Apple Silicon users who want a stable, semi-polished experience with minimal setup. Great for hosting multiplayer.
- Whisky: Ideal for M1/M2/M3 users who don’t want to pay and don’t mind some trial-and-error. Best once configured correctly.
- Bootcamp: Only real option for Intel Macs. Go for it if you have decent specs and don’t mind installing Windows.
Today I’m taking a look at REPO, a co-op horror game where you and your friends are basically haunted robot interns. It’s not available on Mac natively, which is annoying, but not the end of the road. I tried a bunch of workarounds. Some worked, some didn’t. Here’s what actually matters.

Can You Play REPO on Mac?
Yes – kind of. There’s no official Mac support, but there are workarounds. I tested four main methods: Boosteroid, Crossover, Whisky, and Bootcamp. Each one’s got its own quirks, pros, and “why is this even a thing?” moments. Some are smoother than others, and depending on what kind of Mac you’re using, the experience can swing wildly. If you’re determined (and a little patient), it’s definitely doable.

REPO on Mac – Performance
If you need a bit more information before you decide which method to pick, It’s now time to tell you about my personal experience with he different methods plus some speculation on how the game might run with Bootcamp (I am yet to test that one). In general, all of the workarounds are valid options, but they do have some noteworthy differences that are likely tp play a determining factor when choosing a method.
Streaming REPO on MacBook With Boosteroid
I tested REPO on Boosteroid using my MacBook Air over a decent Wi-Fi connection, and honestly, it was way smoother than I expected. Setup was dead simple – log in, launch the game, and you’re playing.
I did get a bit of input lag here and there, especially during high-intensity moments, but it wasn’t deal-breaking. My ping hovered around 22 ms, just over the sweet spot, so wired Ethernet might’ve helped.
Visual quality held steady at 1080p and 60 FPS, though I did notice compression artifacts in darker scenes. Still, for zero installs and no stress? Totally playable and super convenient.

Running REPO on Mac With CrossOver and Whisky
Tried R.E.P.O. on both CrossOver and Whisky, and yeah – they both get the job done, just not in the same way. On my 2020 M1 MacBook Air, CrossOver ran it shockingly well. Smooth frame rate, no real lag, multiplayer worked fine – as long as I was hosting.
- Joining someone else’s is a different deal, but I found a fix for that too, which you can check out in the next section.
CrossOver definitely feels more stable out of the gate. You flip on D3DMetal (Apple Silicon only), and it just kind of behaves. Way fewer crashes, and barely any setup headaches.
Whisky, on the other hand, made me work for it. Black screens, Steam refusing to launch – it was a mess at first. But after switching on DXVK and MSync in the bottle settings, it finally clicked. Surprisingly, multiplayer held up well – even with five players in the mix.
If you’re running an M2 or M3 MacBook Air, expect even better numbers. Higher FPS, fewer slowdowns, and way less heat throttling during long co-op sessions. And if you’re rocking an M3 Pro or Max? You’re pretty much cruising.
Between the two, CrossOver is definitely the cleaner experience, but Whisky’s still totally usable once you wrangle the setup.
Whichever route you take, just know there are going to be quirks along the way. Keep scrolling for fixes and tweaks to smooth things out.
Can’t Join REPO Games on Mac with CrossOver – Fix
If you’re trying to play R.E.P.O on a Mac using CrossOver and the “Join Game” button just… does nothing, you’re not alone. This is a known issue with the in-game menu not behaving properly under CrossOver.
The quick and easy workaround is to just use the Steam invite system instead. Seriously, it’s way easier and it works.
How to Join REPO Games on Mac
- 1.1Open Steam and go to your friends list.
- 1.2Find someone who’s already in a game.
- 1.3Right-click their name and hit “Join Game.”
Boom. You’re in.
This skips the buggy menu entirely and connects you directly to the session. It’s what other Mac users are doing, and it gets around the issue with zero fuss.
REPO Mods on Mac with Whisky (BepInEx + r2modman Setup)
If you’re trying to mod R.E.P.O. on Mac using Whisky, you’ve probably already hit the wall – random crashes, Steam not launching, BepInEx not loading, or r2modman just straight up refusing to work. This guide cuts through the noise and walks you through the setup that’s actually working for people right now.
What You’ll Need
- Whisky (latest version)
- R.E.P.O. installed via Steam inside your Whisky bottle
- BepInExPack for R.E.P.O.
- Optional: r2modman for mod management
Basic BepInEx Setup
- 1.1Launch the game once first (important). Then download and extract the BepInExPack zip from the provided link above.
- 1.2Copy everything inside the
BepInEx
folder (the folder itself + 2 files). - 1.3Go to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\REPO
and paste those files there. - 1.4Open Whisky → Bottle Settings → Wine Configuration.
- 1.5Under the Libraries tab, type
winhttp
, click Add, and set it to Native, then Builtin. - 1.6Run the game. If a terminal window pops up before launch, BepInEx is working.
Optional: r2modman Setup (for Mod Management)
- 1.1Download the standalone
.exe
version into the bottle’s C-Drive. - 1.2Pin it in Whisky → Right-click → Config.
- 1.3Under Arguments, add:
--disable-gpu --no-sandbox --in-process-gpu
- 1.4Add an environment variable:
– Key:WINEDLLOVERRIDES
– Value:libglesv2=d
- 1.5In Bottle Configuration, set Enhanced Sync to ESync.
- 1.6If r2modman launches with a blank screen, recheck that the environment variable saved.
Common Issues + Fixes
- Steam crashes on launch? Downgrade it using this Whisky Steam guide.
- Game crashes after mods load? Could be too many mods, bad mod versions, or missing winhttp override.
- Mods not loading at all? Double-check the mod files are in the correct BepInEx
plugins
folder. - Still stuck? Consider switching to CrossOver, which is reported to be more stable post-Steam update.
Notes
- Users with 8GB RAM Macs have reported sluggish performance, especially with multiple mods.
- Stick to tested mods first (like MorePlayers, Better Stamina) before loading a full mod pack.
REPO Steam Error in Whisky – Fix
If you’re trying to run R.E.P.O. through Whisky and Steam just crashes or throws the dreaded Error 0308 – Key Component Failed to Initialize
, yep – you’re hitting the same issue a lot of us are. It’s caused by a recent Steam update that broke compatibility inside Whisky bottles.
Here’s a tested workaround: downgrade Steam to a version that actually works and block it from updating.
How to Fix the REPO Steam Whisky Error
- 1.1Download the working version of Steam
A repackaged, pre-update version (from Dec 2023) is hosted here:
https://files.mikethetech.com/Steam.zip - 1.2Unzip the archive using something like 7-Zip or Keka.
You’ll get a folder calledSteam
with everything prepped inside.
You can delete any extras (like the China file, unless you need it). - 1.3Move the folder into your bottle’s C Drive:
In Whisky, click Open C Drive.
Navigate toProgram Files
and drag theSteam
folder in there. - 1.4Disable Steam auto-updates:
Go to thesteam.exe
file inside the folder.
Right-click → Config (gear icon in Whisky).
Under Arguments, paste this (from Pablo Lazaro’s method): diffCopyEdit-noverifyfiles -nobootstrapupdate -skipinitialbootstrap -norepairfiles -overridepackageurl
- 1.5Launch Steam, log in, and head to your library.
It should work just like normal – but without trying to update and breaking everything.
Quick Notes:
- This workaround is temporary – Steam may block old versions eventually.
- Always launch using that specific
steam.exe
with the arguments above. - This fixed the error for multiple users trying to mod or just run the game through Whisky.
Download REPO on Mac With BootCamp – Expected Performance
If you’re on an Intel Mac and still hoping to get R.E.P.O. running, your best shot is Bootcamp – but yeah, it comes with some catches.
Since Intel machines don’t support D3DMetal, that means CrossOver and Whisky are out of the picture entirely. Bootcamp, though, runs full Windows natively, so you’re not emulating anything – you’re just running the game like any regular PC. That said, not every Intel Mac is built the same.
- If you’ve got a 2019 or newer Intel MacBook Pro with a quad-core i5 or i7 and a dedicated Radeon GPU, you might be able to squeeze out playable performance – like 30 to 50 FPS on medium settings.
- But if you’re running on older hardware or just using integrated Intel graphics, it’s probably not going to go well. Expect frame drops, stuttering, and maybe even full-on crashes when things get too intense.
Now, if Bootcamp’s not an option for you – or if you’re just not trying to install Windows – cloud gaming is still a solid backup plan. Boosteroid can stream the game straight to your Mac, no need to mess with any installs. You’ll just need a good internet connection and a bit of tolerance for some input lag here and there.
REPO on Mac – Conclusion
So yeah, while REPO isn’t officially on Mac, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. I got it running through CrossOver, Whisky, Bootcamp, and Boosteroid – all with their own quirks.
If you’ve got Apple Silicon, CrossOver or Whisky will get the job done. Intel users? Bootcamp or cloud gaming’s your only real shot.
Boosteroid surprised me the most – super low effort, decent payoff. Just depends on what you’re working with and how much patience you’ve got. Either way, don’t let the lack of a native version stop you. If I can get it running, you probably can too.
