The game had macOS support for most of its lengthy beta-development stage and even though its full release didn’t immediately get ported to Mac, it didn’t take long before Mac users were also able to enjoy BG3 without needing to resort to workaround options.

Right now, playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on Mac is as easy as purchasing the game on Steam, downloading the Steam client, and installing the game through it. From then on, you can launch it through the Steam client and immerse yourself in its fantastical world… as long as your Mac’s hardware is up to the task.

Can you play Baldur’s Gate 3 on your Mac?

The only important factors to consider when it comes to playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on Mac is the game’s moderately high system requirements and its large size of 150 GB. Although the game has a native Mac version, if you are on an older and/or weaker Mac, the machine won’t be able to run the game no matter what. Also, if you don’t have more than 150 gigs of space on your hard drive, you won’t even be able to download it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Intel Macs

The first important thing to address here is that the game’s system requirements on State that you need at least an M1 chip to run it. This suggests that Intel-based Macs won’t be able to support the game. Obviously, we had to put this to the test, so we tried running Baldur’s Gate 3 on the 16-inch 2019 MacBook Pro (16 GB RAM), and we are happy to report that the game runs on it without an issue.

In other words, newer Intel Macs can run Baldur’s Gate 3, but if you own an older machine, such as a MacBook from 2017 or earlier, depending on its specs, the machine’s hardware might not be enough for this game. We cannot accurately confirm what is the oldest and least powerful Intel Mac that can still make the cut, but it’s safe to assume that any model with less than 12 gigs of RAM and released six or more years ago will probably not be able to run this game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Apple Silicon Macs

According to the official requirements, the game should run on all Apple Silicon Macs, including ones powered by the base M1 chip with 8 gigabytes of unified memory. However, in practice, playing the game with this hardware isn’t a great experience.

Our tests and the additional research we did showed that Baldur’s Gate 3 runs poorly (30 FPS or less) on the base M1 chip with only 8 gigs of memory even when played at the low settings. In other words, your Apple Silicon machine will need to have at least 12 gigabytes of unified memory and preferably be powered by an M1 Pro chip or better.

Other ways to play Baldur’s Gate 3 on a Mac

If you own an older Intel Mac or a base M1 Apple Silicon Mac, such as an 2020 M1 MacBook Air with 8 gigs of memory, then the fact that Baldur’s Gate 3 is supported for macOS won’t really mean much to you, since it won’t run well on your machine. The situation is similar if you are limited by your hard drive, and you simply don’t have 150 gigabytes of free space on it.

In such cases, a great alternative is to opt for playing the game through cloud gaming platforms like Boosteroid or GeForce Now. Such methods don’t require you to download anything, as the game is streamed to you over the Internet from a powerful server that does all the heavy lifting. All you need for this is a stable Internet connection and an active subscription for the cloud service you prefer. On the surface, it seems that Apple is further polishing their Apple Silicon products, improving both their efficiency and power at the same time. However, when we delved a bit deeper, we noticed some interesting details that may paint a slightly different picture.

A shift in the balance

When we looked closer at the specifications of the three upcoming M3 chips, it became apparent that the improvements might be a bit less impressive in practice. While the use of new the technology grants the M3 family better efficiency, the chips themselves have been downgraded in terms of raw power.

The most significant difference can be seen in the chips’ memory bandwidth. The M3 Pro chip has a memory bandwidth of 150GB/s which is 25 percent less compared to the 200GB/s of bandwidth available for the M2 Pro and M1 Pro chips. Admittedly, the improved efficiency of the M3 should make up for this decrease, but it’s nevertheless an unusual decision.

The next thing that drew our attention is the changed ratio of performance versus efficiency cores in the M3 Pro chip. Its predecessor, the M2 Pro, had 8 performance and 4 efficiency cores, for a total of 12. The M3 Pro also has 12 CPU cores, but only 6 of them are performance cores focused, while the other 6 are efficiency-focused. It’s hard to say how this would affect the real-life performance of the chip, especially considering its overall improvement in efficiency, yet it’s another change of which we aren’t necessarily fans.

Thirdly, the upgrade from M2 Pro to M3 Pro also seems to have lost a GPU core somewhere along the way. The M2 Pro chip features 19 GPU cores, whereas the new M3 model has only 18. Admittedly, not a huge difference, especially considering that Apple promises a much better use of GPU resources with its Dynamic Caching technology, but it’s still another thing that caught our attention.

Gaming on M3 Macs?

Yes, yes, Macs aren’t gaming machines… yet. In recent years, it seems that slowly, but steadily, the idea of Mac gaming has started to sound a bit less absurd and a bit more plausible. The highly-efficient architecture of the Apple Silicon chips is one of the reasons for this and, according to Apple, the M3 family will be even better at handling complex 3d animations and other graphically-demanding tasks.

As mentioned, the M3 GPUs will use a Dynamic Caching technology that will make much better use of the chip’s resources, thus improving its overall performance when running GPU-intensive apps and games.

Additionally, the M3 chips will also have hardware-accelerated mesh shading for improved geometry processing and hardware-accelerated ray-tracing for more realistic reflections and shadows.

All of these new improvements lead us to think that the M3 chip might be even better-suited for running games on a Mac despite the decreased memory bandwidth and fewer performance and GPU cores. However, this is where the main issue with Mac gaming rears its head once more and that is the lack of macOS support for most games. There are many reasons why this problem exists despite the ability of Apple Silicon machines to meet the requirements of even the most demanding modern games.

Unfortunately, until this issue is resolved, and more games start getting ported to macOS, we won’t be able to fully utilized the hardware power and efficiency of the M3 family of chips for gaming purposes. Apple recently introduced the latest update for iPhones, iOS 16.4, which comes with an array of features, security enhancements, and a fresh set of new emojis in iOS. As a result, there is speculation that a more extensive solution may be needed. Rumors have suggested that an iOS 16.4.1 update could be imminent to address the underlying issue. Apple recently launched Apple Pay Later in the United States, a groundbreaking feature designed to enhance users’ financial wellness. Apple Pay Later allows customers to partition their purchases into four equal installments, distributed across a six-week timeframe with zero interest or fees. Ranging from $50 to $1,000, these loans are applicable for online and in-app transactions conducted on iPhone and iPad with merchants that support Apple Pay. At present, Apple is extending invitations to a select group of users to experience a prerelease version of Apple Pay Later, aiming to make it available to all qualifying users in the subsequent months.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, highlighted that the creation of Apple Pay Later centered on users’ financial well-being by offering flexibility without fees or interest. This enables consumers to make informed and prudent borrowing choices. Accessible and manageable within the Wallet app, Apple Pay Later streamlines the user experience.

When a merchant accepts Apple Pay, Apple Pay Later becomes accessible as a payment alternative during the online and in-app checkout process on iPhone and iPad. Goldman Sachs functions as the issuer of the Mastercard payment credential employed to finalize Apple Pay Later transactions.

Apple Pay Later release date and country availability

The Apple Pay Later feature launched on the 28th March and is currently only available in the US, but will most likely come to other countries, like Canada and the countries in the EU, in the foreseeable future.

How to use Apple Pay Later?

To commence using Apple Pay Later, users can request a loan within the Wallet app without impacting their credit rating. A soft credit inquiry is performed during the application process to verify the user’s financial soundness. Once authorized, users can opt for the Pay Later feature during online and in-app checkouts on iPhone and iPad. Users also have the option to apply for loans directly within the checkout flow.

Apple Pay Later is incorporated into Wallet, enabling users to oversee, track, and administer all their loans in a centralized location. With Apple Pay Later in Wallet, users can effortlessly view the cumulative outstanding balance and the amount due within the next 30 days. A calendar view within Wallet assists users in keeping track of and scheduling their payments. To prevent the accumulation of additional debt, users are required to link a debit card from Wallet for loan repayment, as credit cards will not be permitted.

According to a statement by Apple made on Monday, this new feature will further enhance the safety of the company’s operating systems and their respective devices, as it will allow the systems to always be up-to-date in terms of their security.

The new feature will install new security patches and updates automatically, as soon as they are released, rather than waiting for regular software updates to be released. Note that a similar feature was already tested in the past with iOS 14.5.

The Rapid Security Update fills a similar role to Google’s Play Services and Play  Protect, which help secure Android devices against potential malware attacks and fraud attempts.

Another security feature that Apple announced is the inclusion of two-factor authentication support for third-party apps that will be available through the built-in iOS Passwords feature available in Settings.

Another security-focused change that will come with iOS 16 is the option to edit strong passwords that Safari suggests so that they are adjusted to the specific requirements that certain sites have. Also, with the new iOS release, apps will be required to request permission from the user for access to the device’s clipboard in order to paste content copied from a different app.

Continuing with the announced security enhancements, all USB-C and Thunderbolt accessories, except displays and power adapters, will need the user’s permission before they could connect to a macOS device.

Last but not least, Apple will also introduce support for a passkey login method for its Safari method, which, rather than using conventional passwords, would employ biometric identification – Face ID and Touch ID.

This login technology is developed by the FIDO Alliance and Microsoft and Google have already backed it up. The goal is to swap the use of conventional passwords with digital keys that use biometric verification, which will be stored locally, on the user’s device. The benefits of this login method are that it is both safer and easier to use. Since the digital passkey never leaves the device, phishing tactics would be much less effective at providing unauthorized access to one’s online accounts.

There are also 16 different maps/racetracks inspired by some of the most well-known episodes from each show. In-line with its characters and setting, the game features a cartoony aesthetic, graphics, and gameplay.

By the looks of it (mainly what we’ve seen in the trailer), the game looks promising, and though it’s obviously not something that hasn’t been seen many times before, the crisp graphics, the inspired effects and the faithful to the original representation of each character suggests that Warped Kart Racers would be a fun experience, especially to people who are already fans of the featured animated shows. One thing that caught our attention is the dynamic and faithful facial expressions of each character during the actual races – a cool addition that further reinforces the comedy-style of the game.

To add to the game’s appeal and playful and lighthearted nature, there would be a lot of amusing customization options for each character – from picking between a wide selection of vehicles to deciding what hat and attire would be worn by your character.

Together with Warped Kart Racers, several other games will become available with Apple Arcade during April, including BadLand Party (releases on 6th of May), Goat Simulator (13th of May), and Pro Darts 2022+ (27th of May).

Each of those games are totally free to play with an Apple Arcade subscription, which costs $4.99/month. A single subscription to the service grants up to six family members access to over 200 games available on the Apple Store.

A tweet of a user reporting difficulties with the PiP feature received a reply from the YouTube team on Sunday, where the company said that the experimental feature will be accessible in “a matter of days” for iOS devices running iOS 15 and later.

News outlets highlighted this shift to the launch timetable of the expected feature, but YouTube returned to Twitter in an attempt to explain what it had said.

According to the company’s statement, the tweet was referring to the newly implemented PiP capability for the YouTube TV app. However, YouTube TV wasn’t even included in the original query that produced the response from Google. The software in question was simply referred to as “YouTube”, not “YouTube TV”, by the person who was having trouble with it. This seems to be a mistake made by YouTube itself.

To clarify the confusion, on March 30, YouTube’s TV Twitter feed announced that “The YouTube TV picture-in-picture for iOS 15+ devices is presently being pushed out.” As far as the YouTube app is concerned, it’s exclusively accessible to Android Premium users.

For those unfamiliar with the functionality, picture-in-picture enables videos to be viewed while using other applications. Users may use the picture-in-picture button to view a video in a smaller window while using other apps.

It looks like YouTube is nearly set to introduce the feature after extending the testing period numerous times in an attempt to perfect the experience before it goes live.

In June last year, Google said that picture-in-picture functionality will be made accessible to all U.S. YouTube app users, regardless of whether they are premium or non-paying users. However, many users outside the country have been able to get the feature to operate through shortcuts, suggesting the corporation may be expanding its availability worldwide.

This has been an “experimental feature” on iOS for just YouTube Premium members, and at one point this was believed to suggest that it would stay a premium-only option until Google confirmed that it will ultimately be available to all users in the U.S.

A few days ago, YouTube stated that it will be introducing filtering tools to make it easier for users to discover the content they want. Subscribers will be able to sort by content type, such as Video, VOD, Shorts, and Live on the video tab of a YouTube channel’s video page. Both iOS and Android devices will be able to take advantage of this launch.
