10.6 is not there yet

There is enough different that we have work left to do on quite a few fink packages.

I should have waited

I'm wishing I held off upgrading my 13'' macbook pro for another few weeks. I'm having display glitches and I've had to disable spotlight. The intel fortran compilers work but not gfortran. I'm having troubles with 32/64 bit linking as well... I don't need 64 bit address-space but I'm getting the 64-bit libraries by default and their not always being found. A frustrating experience thus far.

Try the R gfortran packages

Hi Jamie,

I don't have anything meaningful to say about your other issues, but if you want a working gfortran, you can try the ones installed from here:

http://cran.r-project.org/bin/macosx/tools/

Specifically:

http://cran.r-project.org/bin/macosx/tools/gfortran-4.2.3.dmg

last of the the G5s

My primary (desktop) is still Motorola, and thus stuck at 10.5.8

My laptop is Snow Leopard now and running all my LabView vis without glitches.

I was "go" for a 10.6 upgrade much faster than with 10.5

I keep an OmniOutliner document around that lists my critical and not-so-critical apps. This doc has columns for "Support announced?" and "Ready for new OS?" When a new major release of OS X happens, I occasionally do footwork to find out which apps work and keep notes about the readiness of pending apps. This gives me a dashboard that lets me know at a glance when it's appropriate to upgrade.

FWIW, via this tracking it took just a week or two after 10.6's release for the "green light," including support for a broad variety of paid and free apps. For 10.5, it took several months to get to the same state.

I have been able to

I have been able to successfully install gcc 4.3 including gfortran from MacPorts on Snow Leopard.

MacPorts gfortran seems to work..

I am using gfortran from MacPorts (from the gcc-4.3 port) on Snow Leopard for about three weeks now, so far without problems. I have to admit that I am not a heavy Fortran user anymore, but it seems to compile all of my old code well.

10.6.2 on all but 1 machine

I'm running 10.6.2 on my 2 mini's, my 17" MBP and my 13" MBP. I have a Black Macbook that still runs 10.5.8 but am in the process of upgrading it. I've been looking at working with GCD specifically for bioinformatics applications (i.e. viewers, assemblers and aligners). I have high hopes for this framework as a number of researchers are working on 8 core MacPro's and I would like to start taking advantage of all that CPU goodness.

10.4 to 10.6 and a bit of 9

10.6 on one (for OpenCL), 10.5 on one, but 10.4 on most. 10.4 is very nice, has everything I need. Also, my old Pismo happily dual boots to 9.0.4, much needed for FrameMaker.

10.6 at home, 10.5 at work

10.6 was a fairly painless upgrade for me. I'm looking forward to being able to get Snow Leopard on my work machines (a few more months still).

C programming

r.D.r
I have been retired for 11 years.
Worked on Old Fortran for about 33 years.
Wrote a very few C programs and would like to spend a bit more time programming in C before I attempt to use Object programming (Object-C) on 10.6.x).
Trying to find out how to set up GCC C on macBook Pro.
Any suggestions?
Thank you and thanks for the this Web site.

Re: C Programming

Hi,

Just download the Xcode developer tools from the Apple website: http://developer.apple.com (you may need to create a free ADC account). Install those and that will install gcc and all of the tools necessary for writing Objective-C/Cocoa based applications as well.

Hope that helps,

Dave

Snow Leopard now

I've been upgrading to the newest version of Mac OS X pretty regularly. Like all the Mac zealots out there, I line up at the Apple Store to get the new version the day it comes out. LOL. With the automatic updates, I'm running 10.6.2 on my primary and secondary machines, which are a 17" MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro Desktop.

I have a third Mac that is running Tiger but it has a broken LCD and I don't really use it that often, so no compelling reason to upgrade that one. I try to keep most of my machines up to date to fully utilize all the video software I maintain for my club penguin cheats blog. I really like the new end-user and developer features in Snow Leopard, even if it didn't feel like as big of an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard.

Mac research

I read lots about this Macresearch community from lots of major poular forums and Article sites, recently Macresearch team launched a popular MAC O/S Application. really work very fast.

10.6 is the way to go.

Why is 10.6.x the way to go, you may ask - simply because of the framework and security it provides. I'm one of the few people who believe us mac users are going to get hit by some spiteful programmer someday.
