MathType

When setting up a new Mac I formatted the hard disk using the case-sensitive option. I have been able to install and run all of the software that I use on a Mac except MathType for which the installer failed. When I contacted Design Science they informed me that "MathType dose not support Case Sensitive formatting". As Mathtype 6 for the Mac is due to be released later this year i asked if that would support case-sensitive formatting. Design Science said they would note my request.

So if there are other Macresearch readers who use Mathtype and would like to be able to install it on a case-sensitive formatted disk do please contact Design Science to let them know. Perhaps they will correct this problem with Mathtype if there are enough requests.

Why?

MathType is a horrible typesetting system. If you use it in Word documents, then your collaborators can't edit your documents without it.

Typesetting with Word is much more laborious than using LaTeX anyway, but MathType just adds insult to injury.

I agree with frank_elliott

I agree with frank_elliott here. MathType just isn't worth the money or time. You'd be much better off using LaTeX, either by learning it and coding in one of the excellent editors like Vim, Emacs, or TextMate, or by using LyX (which is 'WYSIWYM'); nothing beats the beauty of documents and equations typeset in LaTeX.

There are also lots of free and excellent tools available. One example is LaTeXiT, which allows you to typeset equations for inclusion (drag and drop) in programs like Keynote, Pages, and even Word. Go forth and explore!

MathType does TeX Nicely

MathType is a great tool for writing equations in TeX. It has four output options (I am talking about version 5.1): AMS-LaTeX, AMS-TeX, LaTex (v. 2.09 or higher), and Plain TeX. I think you would have to be quite proficient in TeX to produce a TeX equation faster than by setting it up in MathType.
