One big leap in Leopard is Apple's use of the open source dtrace program, both from the command-line and in Instruments, a clean graphical interface to debugging, tracing, and application profiling.
We will shortly have a tutorial on using dtrace and Instruments in scientific applications and on clusters to do remote debugging. In the meantime, there are several extremely useful sources for dtrace scripts and how-tos.
- MacTech: Exploring Leopard with DTrace
- DTrace Howto Guide on Solaris
- Solaris Dynamic Tracing Guide
- Top 10 DTrace Scripts
- OpenSolaris DTraceToolkit (some useful dtrace scripts)
Apple has also provided extensive notes in a developer user guide to Instruments.
