Core Plot Code-a-Thon is Nigh
The WWDC Core Plot code-a-thon is now less than a week away. Beginning next Tuesday at midday in San Francisco, the coding marathon will begin, and it will end at midday Friday.
The Core Plot team has been working very hard the last few weeks to make sure everything is ready. The project wiki now includes introductory documents and procedures to help developers new to the framework find their way. It also includes information about what you need to do in order to contribute to the code-a-thon. Those attending WWDC and planning to partake are advised to do a bit of background reading before coming, in order to get up and running quicker.
Those that have not been lucky enough to get a ticket to WWDC are not left out: The source code repository used for the code-a-thon is publicly accessible, and all the information you need to contribute can be found on the wiki. You can contribute even if you are not physically present at WWDC. We are going to be using IRC throughout for discussions (#coreplot on server irc.oftc.net), so it will be like you are actually there.

Core Plot
Something I don't quite follow about this. It seems as though the development of this framework is encouraged by Apple, yet don't they already have their own framework for this underlying the plots produced in iWork?
Thank you!
Thank you for all your effort guys, I am sure the results will be excellent!

Data aquisition and applescript
I'd also love to know if the framework will be suitable for plotting live during data aquisition and will plots be applescriptable?
Re: Data aquisition
Yes, we hope to support real time data.
Haven't given any thought to applescript yet, but it could probably be added at a later stage.

Re: Apple's motives
I can't really say what Apple's motives are, but I assume they are just trying to help the developer community. They hear a lot of call for a plotting framework, but it is too much of a niche, and too broad a range of requirements, for Apple to release something themselves. So they would rather the open source community do it, and they are willing to help it succeed.

Hey, Drew!! any comments
Hey, Drew!!
any comments about the CorePlot Code-a-Thon? any news?
Re: Progress
The code-a-thon generated a lot of interest, and there were many people at the kick off, and many people checking out the code.
It's not clear how much code we will get out of it in the short term. It takes time for people to get up to speed. But the hope is that some of those looking at the code will start to contribute after WWDC, and give core plot a boost.

Is PLplot fully functional for OS 10.5.7?
From the Wiki page, I note that there are parts of PLplot not available for Leopard. The Wiki page was last dated 2007, so I wonder if now the routines are fully functional under Leopard. Also, since Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) will have new capabilities in terms of speed and multi-threading (multiple core systems), will PLplot work under this new OS? The latter is important for those of us who use late version Mac Pros for large number crunching.
Thanks

iWork
I believe that the framework will be suitable for plotting live during data aquisition and will plots be applescriptable.
Great piece
Hey great piece. I would love to find out more. Are you planning to write more about the Core Plot development? casino online

You can always come by and look at the discussions at the Google discussion group.
I will do an update here, and perhaps a tutorial, when it is a bit further along.
